Hand Mined Brandberg Quartz

The Brandberg mountains rise out of the red desert to form the highest range in Namibia. The summit, Königstein, German for "King's Stone", stands at over 2,500 metres. The bottom picture (courtesy of Nasa) is from space and shows the perfect circular form. These mountains were always held sacred and are famed for ancient rock paintings and engravings.

The indiginous Damara people named the mountain Dâures, which means "Burning Mountain". Brandberg is German for "Fire Mountain", because of its beautiful orange glow at sunset. The Herero people named Brandberg, Omukuruvaro "Mountain of the Gods".

Brandberg Harlequin Dow Star Cluster

This is a rare star cluster where most of the crystals have the red streaks of the harlequin formation and tiny (you need a loupe) garnets on the outside. The latter are seen as little nodules, but close inspected reaveals their geometry to me that of clear garnets, a phenomena occassionally seen on Brandbergs. The crystals on this cluster are in pristine condition and includes Dow, transmitter and channelling formations.

A cluster of harlequins is extremely rare and far prettier than conveyed in an admittedly poor picture.

Although not entirely clear in the picture, the largest, main crystal has twin amethyst reverse sceptre heads. On the rear as pictured is an unusual calcite coating. Excellent curvature and elongation of the smaller reverse sceptre.
