Celtic Symbols were later adopted by Christianity, this as a symbol of the Trinity. Earlier cultures recognized a threefold pattern in many areas. From the three gunas or modes of ancient India, to the triple Goddess of the ancient Greeks. Artemis (waxing moon), Selene (full moon) and Hecate (waning moon). In Ireland the triple Goddess is represented as Anu, who is the maiden, Badb, the mother, and Macha, who is the crone. In Wales the three are represented by Blodeuwedd, maiden, Arianrhod, mother, and Cerridwen, crone.
